Beech Spinning wheel construction.
6 Segments cut on mitre saw glued held with cargo straps and weighted to keep flat. Glued to plywood backing board, then cut on with circular jig on bandsaw and mounted on the lathe. Once on the lathe the ouside dimension is turned and the groove cut for the drive band. Decoration and sandingare completed and then the inside of the wheel is turned. the ring is now placed in a vice to sand the inside, this cannot be done on the lathe as the ring detatches once the inside diameter is cut. Next the spokes and axle are turned. The outside of the axle and the inside of the wheel are drilled to accept the spokes. the wheel is then broken so the spokes and the axle can be fitted, the alterative is to make the axle in two pieces and glue it together round the spokes. Once built it is strapped and weighted again and finally the whole wheel is mounted on the lathe for any corrections (to make its spin balanced) and remove any glue stains.
